To Road Trip or Not to Road Trip?

Living in East Hampton, I'm always torn on whether to go on a road trip in the Summer and Fall. Other times of the year, not so much, I am always game. It is so beautiful in my home town, thousands of people descend on our slice of paradise to spend a week-end, week, month or season to sit on the beaches, enjoy the bays, eat at the restaurants, and enjoy the outdoors. Still, more often than not, my desire for a change of scenery and pace usually wins out. I love to travel - all kinds of travel - but leaving for more than a week really does it for me. My favorite getaways are Casco, Maine where my mom has a beautiful house in the lake region on a quaint pond and, on the other end of the spectrum, St. John, USVI, where my husband and I started building a house in 2006. Yes, the St. John house still is not finished. Our St. John home is one step below glamping, but it does have hot water, a shower and toilet, an outdoor grill and fridge, and a few light switches. So, I'm good to go. Travel is my wanderlust. So, even though I am missing some of prime time Hamptons living, I still plan a few weeks to travel when not working in the Summer and Fall. Soon, I'll be off to Casco.
Casco, Maine is like the Amagansett of my youth. The town is comprised of a general store that sells beer, pizza, bait and ammo. Next door in a converted barn is Pears, an ice cream and hoagie shop that opens on Memorial Day and closes just after Labor Day. There is a small library, a community center, a community church and one small gift shop located off the town green. And that is it. Don't blink or you'll miss it. I so love this place. Every summer during the last week-end of July, the fire department hosts Casco Days Fair, a true country fair where there is a little something for everyone. It boasts a old ferris wheel, a carousal, bean-o (their version of Bingo, but you win prizes instead of money), some tossing games for kids where the top prize is a stuffed animal, raffles, and some dice games for adults. Hot dogs, burgers, fries and fried dough are the cuisine choices. Everyone is happy. People from all the neighboring towns descend on this little village for 3 days a year and a chance to catch up with their friends. It is true country living at its best. Casco, more than anyplace, is my happy place. For more information, visit Tips and Trades for some links to Casco and Casco Days.
So, what are you doing this summer for a bit of wanderlust? My friends walked the Coast to Coast trail in England, a few other acquaintances are planning on walking a pilgrimage - the Camino de Santiago. Others, just came back from Europe. Luke, Ashley and the kids are heading to Africa. You don't need a lot of money: grab a sleeping bag and tent and go camping and hiking, one of my favorites. Visit the Budget Minded Traveler for ideas on low budget travel. I'll post a link in Tips and Trades. Just pick something and do it. Liberate your soul.
