Scenes From A Night On The Harbor

On Bastille Day weekend, the Clamshell Foundation, a local charity, puts on a spectacular fireworks show over Three Mile Harbor. Knock on wood, we have been blessed with outstanding weather for the past several years. It's a time when friends and family gather for a potluck BBQ and a chance to slow down and catch up. This year, the evening was warm, the food was awesome, the company friendly, and the show was amazing. This gathering on our lawn has become such a tradition that we don't really have to invite anyone anymore - they just know to arrive by 7 p.m., bring what they want to drink, a dish for the table, and a flashlight so they don't kill themselves trying to maneuver back to their cars when the last light from the sky fades.
By mid-July, the pace of the Hamptons is manic and stressful. Seriously, a trip to the grocery store and post office requires strategic planning if you want to avoid the crowds, get a parking space, and manage to get out unscathed. I waited on the check out line for 25 minutes at a nearby deli when I committed the grave error of forgetting to pick up tin foil during my last pilgrimage to Stop and Shop. I muttered at my stupidity for days.
Our annual fireworks party is the perfect summer break. It reminds us to stop and smell the roses, that summer is halfway over, and we need to enjoy each day, every day for all the beauty and opportunities to be outside. Don't let the summer pass you by - go out and do something fun. Breath in the salty air, grab a book and veg out on a lawn chair, visit a trail, restaurant or beach that you have yet to explore. Make plans to see a friend you haven't seen for a long time. Try your hand at paddle boarding. Wear shorts and tank tops and bask in the warmth of the sun while you still can. Enjoy your life!
